SUNY New Paltz Campus
From WikiPaltz: the collective knowledge of New Paltz and beyond
The SUNY New Paltz campus covers 216 acres and is thus the largest expanse in the Village of New Paltz. It was founded in 1885 as a "Normal School" to train students to become teachers in the public schools of New York State.
In 2006, the advertised founding date of the campus (1828) was challenged by the former Director of Academic Advising William Sample and the late Dennis O'Keefe, a former researcher at the Sojourner Truth Library. They claimed that the Alice Chandler administration at SUNY New Paltz began using the the 1828 date as a public affairs stunt to boost its age, pointing out that the state university publicly celebrated its 75th anniversary in 1960, meaning it priorly acknowledged 1885 as its founding date.
The campus is in the middle of the Catskill Mountains, and the Shawangunk Ridge is clearly visible from campus.
[edit] Distinguishing Features
[edit] The Gunk
The Gunk is a pond on the SUNY New Paltz campus. It drains into the Wallkill River.
It presumably was named after the Gunks (The Shawangunk Ridge visible from campus), in addition to its appearance. The Gunk is home to substantial wildlife, including at least one domestic crane, some large carp, many box turtles and painted turtles, Waterfowl, and muskrats. There have been reports of large-mouth bass at the large end of the gunk, but no pictures have emerged yet.
[edit] Waterfowl
The SUNY New Paltz campus is home to several types of Waterfowl, including domestic greylag geese, canada geese, mallard ducks, and a difficult-to-classify creature often called by the pet-name Chuck.
In 2005, some of the Waterfowl gave birth to children, adding to the vivid animal population on campus.

This campus convenience store is located on the first floor of the Hasbrouck Dining Hall, and has meal options from frozen Lean Cuisine to philly cheese steak sandwiches prepared on the spot.
[edit] SUB Food Court / Hawks Nest
Situated across the first floor of the Student Union Building, the SUB Food Court (renamed in 2006 by the SUNY Administration to "Hawks Nest") boasts a wide variety of food choices at its venues, specifically for those who do not have the Carte Blanche meal plan.
[edit] Jazzman's Café
Jazzman's Café offers a selection of coffees, gourmet baked goods, sandwiches, and salads. Jazzman's Café has three locations on the campus.
