[edit] History
New Paltz NORML was founded in 1994 in response to several students' opposition to the SUNY College at New Paltz's expulsion policy, known as the "No Second Chance Policy". They successfully got the policy changed soon after the formation of the organization. The students and community members who got the chapter started also were opposed to society's laws prohibiting marijuana, and aimed at changing policy on a broader level than just on campus.
SSDP (Students for Sensible Drug Policy) was added to the organization's title in 2001 as New Paltz NORML's members became involved with this up-and-coming national organization then comprised mostly of college students devoted to ending the War on Drugs. Now even high school chapters exist.
Since many students register to vote in New Paltz (and even are able to vote on campus!) the organization has run several successful campaigns to help change local, state and federal policy. The most prominent was influencing Maurice Hinchey, the US Congressional Representative for New Paltz, that medical marijuana was an important issue. Thousands of signatures were collected and sent to him, and he listened. He went from not being aware of the issue to proposing legislation to protect medical marijuana patients from federal prosecution in states that have medical marijuana laws. The group also has collected thousands of signatures for the state legislators to influence passing medical marijuana legislation in NY. The bill keeps making it further and is closer than ever to passing now.

NORML/SSDP organizes rallies, protests, and information sessions which stand to create awareness about the constant failure of the drug war on America's youth, and the ever-growing amount of illegal actions taken by police, including illegal searches and seizures, a violation of the fourth amendment.
