Talk:Main Page

New Paltz is an organism. The wiki is the brain.

[edit] The Defunct Events Calendar

Since the Events Calendar is quite defunct, I'm curious to know if anyone would agree that it would be in the best interest of dignifying WikiPaltz to remove it all together. Am I alone in thinking this?

[edit] Senate Tools on Main Page

Do you think we could get some kind of legislation list on the main page, maybe even just for senators. I feel like some of this stuff is really good and not everyone necessarily can see it (particularly non senators) -Avi

Well, for Senators, is the portlet on the left not enough? JustinHolmes 23:21, 15 October 2007 (CDT)

For senators yes, but for laypeople maybe just something concise like the top 5 co-sponsored ones or something.

I like where you're going!! JustinHolmes 23:30, 15 October 2007 (CDT)

I'm not sure if it should be by co-sponsors or by date of intended introduction because I feel like otherwise Resolution 1 will never leave the main page.

As an aside, did you see resolution 6?

Maybe not by number of co-sponsors, or date of intended introduction, but rather after it has been passed in say a "Senate News" section. This way the students have easy accessibility to gaining knowledge of the Senate's actions. Sadly many students are too lazy to click around a bit to find this information and by making it easier for them, their participation or at least their ability to recognize the Senate's actions is increased. - Josh Goldberg

Well I'd say let's start working on the template and then find a place to fit it. We'll call it.... Template:SenateFeed? JustinHolmes 16:12, 17 October 2007 (CDT)
That seems good. I'm still periodically checking the code of pages I look at to become more familiar with the style. The page itself shouldn't be that hard to do. I still have to look at code for the frames and stuff to really help out. - Josh

[edit] Vandalism

Due to a recent string of vandalism related to the Senate election, would anyone be against protecting the Main Page from editing until the elections are over?

- Christian Amez 17:07, 20 November 2007 (CST)

Yes I would. Let's just keep reverting it. That's what wiki is. JustinHolmes 17:20, 20 November 2007 (CST)

I have to agree with Christian here. This is rediculous. I say lock the page. -Avi

Yeah i am for locking it but on the other hand i see how it wouldnt be a good idea...idk this is getting really out of hand--Senator Jake 20:23, 20 November 2007 (CST)

This really needs to stop. Ban his IP or lock the page, i don't care which it's out of hand. -Avi

The reason I suggest using the "Protect Page" function, is because it seems to be one of the main reasons why the function was introduced and is used (in addition to protecting important pages, which in other Wiki's would include the Main Page). I am certainly not for banning his/her IP, or anyone else's IP address, but I feel as though protecting the Main Page - in tradition of other Wiki's such as WikiPedia - is something that was long awaited.
Just for clarification, using the "Protect Page" function (which for those who don't know, is an additional tab/editing tool that appears on every page for WikiPaltz for Sysops) on the Main Page will not prevent people from editing the News, NewsPic, Weekly Calendar, or other separate templates on the front page. The only pages that are currently protected (from my knowledge), are past Senate Legislation such as 42nd Student Senate Bill 10.
- Christian Amez 16:47, 21 November 2007 (CST)

The main page is not locked. Only registered users can edit it. I agree with the sentiments of the last post but please do not sign my name to things that I have not authored. That said I will allow editing for unregistered users again if there is a swell in support on this page. Additionally any sysop can revert my page protection, not just Justin Holmes. -Brian E. [edit] WikiPaltz Logo

I want a return to the good ol' orange lettering WikiPaltz logo. I miss it. =(

We need a main page overhaul, and I for one nominate you, Christian Amez, to put forth a prototype, perhaps selected from the ones you created back when this was last discussed. JustinHolmes 14:37, 5 February 2008 (CST)

Oh shit, the wiki's dead? Guess I should stop browsing.
