Ulster County is governed by a County Legislature consisting of 33 elected legislators and an appointed County Administrator. The County Legislature selects one of its memebers to act as chairman, the highest position in the County. The Legislature meets at the county seat, the City of Kingston. It is located on Fair Street.

The Village of New Paltz is located in Legislative District 10. The Village has two representatives on the legislature, Hector Rodriguez (D-New Paltz) a village resident, and Susan Zimet (D-New Paltz) a town resident. The Town of New Paltz also has smaller portions in neighboring districts including Gardiner (District 8) and Highland (District 11). In total, New Paltz has 7 legislators who represent portions of the town.
