Village Government
New Paltz is an organism. The wiki is the brain.
The Village of New Paltz Government has an elected Mayor and Village Board. Terry Dungan, a 40-year resident of New Paltz and SUNY New Paltz graduate, was elected Mayor in May of 2007. In addition to Mayor Dungan, the Village Board includes Deputy Mayor Michael Zierler, and Trustees Jean Gallucci, Shari Osborn, and Mark Portier. Village elections occur in May. Terms are for four years. The Village Board is supported by the Planning and Zoning Boards, as well as a number of commissions and committees. These bodies are comprised of volunteers. SUNY New Paltz students are welcome to participate. Visit the Village website or contact the Village Clerk for more information.
Former Village of New Paltz Mayor Jason West made international news when he attempted to officiate the marriages of 25 same-sex couples on February 27, 2004.
The Village Board meets on the first, third and fourth Wednesdays of the month at 7:30 pm at Village Hall, 25 Plattekill Ave (next to the firehouse), on the 2nd floor. Members of the community are welcome and encourged to attend. Handicap access is provided. Copies of the Village Board's meeting agenda are available online via the Village website and in the Village Clerk's office on the day of the meeting.
